One of the country’s largest but least inhabited regions, the Amazon is a mysterious world that has drawn explorers, adventurers and scientists for centuries: a world dominated by water and forest, where the curiara — a boat cut from a single trunk — is the only means of transport.
Why it works for your clients
The region is crossed by the Orinoco, whose source lies in the far south, and by tributaries winding through deep green forest inhabited by jaguars and anteaters. The only town of any size is Puerto Ayacucho, a river port ten minutes by boat from Colombia and the last outpost before a world that seems of another age. Beyond it lie communities several days by curiara from anywhere, and Cerro Autana, the sacred mountain that a Piaroa legend calls the Giant Life Tree, reached on an unforgettable two-day boat journey.
How we operate it
Flight to Puerto Ayacucho and a lodge on the river, with afternoon excursions by bongo, a full day for indigenous villages and the ethnological museum, and — for parties with time and appetite — the expedition to Cerro Autana.
