Canaima National Park

A UNESCO World Heritage park of 30,000 km² holding the world's tallest waterfall.

Canaima National Park lies on the Macizo de Guayana, one of the oldest geological formations on Earth, and entered the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List in 1994. It is characterised by the tepuys that enthralled Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, covered by lush vegetation including more than five hundred orchid species, and crossed by the tributaries of the Caroní — one of which, the Carrao, forms the Canaima lagoon, where the water runs from black to red with plant decomposition.

Why it works for your clients

The park holds Salto Ángel, at 979 metres the world’s tallest single waterfall, named after Jimmie Angel, who overflew it in October 1937 and landed on the Auyantepui by accident; he and his three companions walked out down the Carrao in eleven days. It is a genuine bucket-list icon most well-travelled clients have not yet done, and it sells at two very different price points: a two-night comfort programme with lodge, lagoon and overflight, or a three-day expedition by curiara to the base of the falls with a night in hammocks.

How we operate it

We fly clients in from Caracas or Puerto Ordaz on scheduled or chartered aircraft, receive them at the airstrip with our own team and host them at our lodges on the lagoon. River trips use Pemón crews and curiaras from the park’s communities; we check river levels daily and reposition the programme when the Churún runs too low. Helicopter access to the summit of Auyantepui and private overflights are available for clients who do not want to sleep in a hammock.
