Angel Falls comes off the edge of this mountain. Reaching the plateau means three days of climbing through terraces, a wall that is passed on hands and fixed lines, and then a labyrinth of black sandstone where distances stop meaning anything. Our own crews carry, cook and rig.
Day by day
Day 1 — Uruyén to Guayaraca
Charter flight in, then four or five hours across savanna onto the first terrace, at about 1,100 m.
Day 2 — Guayaraca to El Peñón
Five to seven hours of steady climbing through gallery and cloud forest to camp under the sandstone monolith.
Day 3 — El Peñón to the plateau
The hardest day: near-vertical rooted forest, chimneys and short fixed-line sections through the wall at Peñón del Oso.
Day 4 — Across the plateau
A traverse of black sandstone and endemic flora to Campamento El Libertador, the highest camp.
Day 5 — The summit day
A full day on the plateau — the Churún headwaters and the rim above the drop that becomes Angel Falls.
Day 6 — Descent to Guayaraca
Back down the wall and the terraces, about seven hours.
Day 7 — Guayaraca to Uruyén
The last savanna leg, the Kavac canyon if there is time, and the flight out.
