Three hundred kilometres from Caracas lies Morrocoy National Park: about thirty cays, some covered in palm trees and mangroves, others low-lying islets of pure white sand, set among channels rich in bird life.

It is the practical Caribbean chapter — no internal flight, a scenic road transfer, and a park that satisfies snorkelers, divers, birdwatchers and beach-goers at once. The mangroves are an important nesting ground for frigate birds, scarlet ibis, pink flamingos, crested herons and cormorants, so the boat trip out to the cays is itself the excursion.
How we operate it
Private vehicle from Caracas, a posada we know in Tucacas or Chichiriviche, and a boat each morning to the cays with a lunch box on the beach. Most posadas run their own boats, which keeps the timing ours rather than the dock’s.
